About our Newport News masonry company

Curved brick paver driveway leads to a red-brick house with white columns, framed by trees and trimmed hedges.

Why I moved from new houses to old brick

I spent my first years in masonry laying block and brick on new houses, and I learned the trade from the masons on those crews. New work starts clean, with everything going up at the same time. In 2020 I started K&R Newport News Concrete & Masonry to work on homes people already live in, where the old wall has a history and the fix has to fit it.

Around Newport News, most of our calls start with crumbling mortar joints, a tired chimney, or a new wall or walkway someone wants done with care. Repointing and repair on older brick is what we're best known for. I care that the repair suits the wall it's going into, because a fix that fights the old brick just makes a new problem. I also want you to understand what we did and why, so the next time something changes you'll know what you're looking at. If something about your brick is bothering you, tell us about it.

How we work on your house

These are the parts of a job you'll notice from the first visit to the last cleanup, and they come from years of working on homes where people are still living.

  • You understand the fix before you decide

I come out to look at every job myself and walk it with you, explaining what I see in plain words before I write anything up. That way you know what's wrong with the wall and why the repair makes sense before you commit to anything.

  • The repair matches what your house has

Old brick and new mortar have to get along, a bit like an old door and a new hinge. We match the mortar mix and the tools to what's already on your house, so the new work doesn't hurt the old brick around it.

  • We work around your yard and routine

We came to lived-in homes from new construction, so we plan the job around your yard, your family and your day. I work alongside our masons, which means the person who walked the job with you is there while it gets done.

  • Review offices are flagged up front

If your address sits in a historic district or near the water, I tell you early which offices need to weigh in. Any review can happen first, so it doesn't hold up the work once we've started.

Licensing and permits for your masonry job

  • Licensed and fully insured.

Licensed and fully insured. That covers our crew while we're working on your property, so you aren't left carrying the risk of someone else's job.

  • City building permits

In Newport News, Codes Compliance at City Hall issues building permits for repairs, additions and new construction, and the city's permits and zoning page is where applications start. Driveways are on the city's exempt list, but most masonry work isn't named there either way, so before we start we check with the permit office for your address and handle the paperwork when the job calls for it.
