Is a paver driveway worth it for a Newport News home?

Driveway pavers in Newport News are interlocking concrete pavers laid over a packed stone base, so you get a surface that carries your cars and works for walking too, with pieces that can be lifted and reset instead of a slab that has to be broken out.

Most people call us when an old concrete or asphalt driveway has cracked, sunk at the edges or been patched so many times it looks like a quilt. The price mostly turns on the size of the driveway, how much old surface has to come out, how deep the base needs to go and the paver you pick, and the schedule turns on the weather and whether the work reaches the street and needs the city's sign-off first. I'll write up your own figure once I've walked the driveway with you.

How do you know your driveway is ready to replace?

  • Cracks that keep spreading

A crack or two in an old concrete driveway is normal, but cracks that keep growing until the slab breaks into pieces usually mean the ground under it has moved. Patching only covers the line, and every year water gets in, the pieces rock a little more under your tires.

  • Puddles that sit after rain

Water that sits in the same low spots usually means the base has settled there. Left alone, it keeps soaking in and softening what's underneath, so the low spot grows toward the garage or the street.

  • Ruts in old pavers

If an existing paver driveway has sunk in the tire tracks, the base was usually too thin or the pavers weren't made for cars. The longer it goes, the more pavers tip and crack, and resetting them on the same base only buys a short break.

Our driveway pavers work, from the base up

A paver driveway is only as good as what's under it, so that's where most of our effort goes. Before anyone digs, we have the underground lines marked and check whether the work reaches the street, because that decides which city permits come into it. Then we take out the old driveway, dig down to firm ground and build the base in thin layers of crushed stone, packing each one tight with a heavy vibrating plate before the next goes in. We set edging along the sides so the pavers can't creep outward, spread a thin bed of sand, lay pavers made to carry a car, run the plate over them and sweep sand into the joints so they lock together.

A driveway often touches other masonry around it. If it runs along a slope or the yard drops off beside it, our retaining wall construction keeps the dirt from pushing on the base or washing out from under the edge. And if the brick steps, porch or old garden walls next to it are crumbling, masonry restoration brings them back so the new driveway doesn't make the rest of the front look tired.

  • Standard interlocking pavers

This is the right pick for most driveways, because thick pavers that lock edge to edge spread a car's weight across the base. They come in plenty of colors and shapes, and a single paver can be lifted and reset if it ever settles.

  • Permeable interlocking pavers

These leave wider gaps filled with small stone, so rain soaks down into a deeper open-stone base instead of running off. They don't suit every lot, so I'll tell you on the visit whether yours is a candidate before you set your heart on them.

  • Borders and herringbone patterns

A row of contrasting pavers along the edges gives the drive a finished look, and a herringbone pattern holds up well where tires turn. Both add cutting and labor, so I'll show you the difference on the estimate if you're on the fence.

What happens after you call about driveway pavers in Newport News

Here's how a paver driveway goes with us, from your first call to the day we walk the finished drive together.

  1. Call or send the form

Call (757) 782-8614 or use the form, and we'll get back to you to set a time that suits you. Give us your address when you do, because it tells me early which city rules may apply.

  2. Walk the driveway with me

I come out, look at the driveway with you and point out what I see before I write anything up. The estimate spells out the tear-out, the base, the paver and the price, so you can see what drives the number before you decide.

  3. Build it, then walk it

Once you say go, we sort out permits and any review your address needs, then dig out, build the base and lay the pavers. At the end I walk the finished driveway with you and show you what to keep an eye on.

Why Newport News homeowners pick K&R for a paver driveway

  • The owner walks every job

I come out to look at every driveway myself and write the estimate, and on the job I work alongside our masons. The person who told you how deep the base would go is the one standing in the hole when it goes in.

  • Licensed and fully insured

We're licensed and fully insured. Virginia sorts contractor licenses by the size of a single contract or a year's total work, so it's fair to ask any installer whether theirs fits a job your size.

  • In business since 2020

I started this business in 2020, after years laying block and brick on new houses, to work on homes people already live in. Six years in, the habit that stuck is showing you what we did and why, so you know what you're looking at later.

Ask any installer how deep the base will go and why, because that answer tells you more about a driveway than any photo of the pavers. Call or send the form and I'll come out and walk yours with you.

Paver driveways, city permits and waterfront lots in Newport News

In Newport News, the city's first step for any project is a call to the Department of Codes Compliance to learn whether a building permit is needed, and the director of public works issues the permit for any driveway work inside the city's right-of-way, which is usually the stretch where your driveway meets the street. A job that disturbs 2,500 square feet or more of land needs a land disturbance permit from the Department of Planning Development Services. If your lot falls in the city's Resource Protection Area, the tidal wetlands, tidal shores and the 100-foot vegetated buffer beside them, any disturbance needs a water quality impact assessment approved by the Environmental Services Division before work starts. We check your address with the permit office and handle the paperwork when the job calls for it, and if you're near the water we flag it early so that review happens first. Rules change, so the city's Chesapeake Bay page has the current version.

City code also makes you, the owner, pay for your driveway and keep it and the sidewalk it crosses in good repair, so we build the end at the street as carefully as the rest. A lot of what we replace here are older, narrow concrete driveways patched over the years, and we see the same thing on jobs in Hampton and Poquoson.

Questions about driveway pavers in Newport News

How much do driveway pavers cost in Newport News?

Across the US, driveway pavers usually run about $10 to $30 per square foot with materials and labor included, and that's a national figure, not our price. Where your job lands depends on the size, how much old driveway comes out, how deep the base goes and the paver you choose, so I'll write up your own number after I walk it with you.

Do I need a permit for a paver driveway in Newport News?

Often you do, and any work that reaches into the city's right-of-way at the street needs one, with extra reviews for big jobs and lots near tidal water, as I laid out above. If you're not sure whether your lot sits in the waterfront area, tell me when you call and I'll look into it first.

How long does a paver driveway last, and how long does it take to install?

A national cost guide puts a paver driveway's life at 25 to 75 years and the installation at about a week. That wide range on lifespan mostly comes down to the base and the upkeep, so it's worth weighing the price against all those years of use.

Can I use large paving slabs for my driveway?

No, thinner, larger paving slabs can flex and crack under a car's weight, so a driveway calls for interlocking pavers. If you love the look of slabs, they're better saved for a walk or patio beside the driveway.

What is the best way to build the base for a paver driveway?

Industry guidance calls for a thicker stone base under a driveway than under a walk, with the depth set by soil strength, drainage, climate and the traffic it carries. When you compare quotes, ask each installer how deep they plan to go for your driveway and why, and I'll show you mine on the estimate.

Do I need a licensed contractor to put in a paver driveway in Virginia?

Not if you do it yourself, because Virginia's contractor rules exclude owners who do or supervise work on their own primary residence, for no more than one such home for their own use in any 24-month period. It's heavy work with heavy equipment, so if you'd rather hand it off, I'm glad to walk it with you and give you a number.

  • Retaining wall construction

When the yard rises or falls away beside your drive, a solid wall holds that ground in place so the edge of the new pavers stays put.

  • Masonry restoration

Tired brick steps, porch walls or old borders next to a new driveway can be cleaned, repaired and repointed so the front of the house matches again.
