What goes into building a retaining wall in Newport News?
Retaining wall construction in Newport News means building a wall that holds back the soil behind it, and anything resting on that soil, so a sloping yard becomes level ground you can actually use. A block wall does that mostly with its own weight, which is why what's under it and behind it matters as much as the face you see.
Most calls start with a slope that won't stay put or a yard too steep to mow, and the fix is a wall built to take the push of that soil. The price moves mostly with the type of wall, its height and length, how much digging and backfill the slope needs and how easy it is to get material to the spot. The schedule turns on the weather, on whether a taller wall needs an engineer's design and on any city review a lot near the water needs. I'll walk the slope with you and explain what I see before I write up a number for your wall.
How do you know your yard needs a retaining wall?
Soil creeping onto the patio
You're sweeping dirt or mulch off the patio or walk after every heavy rain. That usually means the slope above is moving a little at a time, and the longer it goes, the more fill there is to haul back up.
Ruts washing down the slope
Channels open up in the lawn or the beds after a storm, and they get deeper each time. Water is running straight down with nothing to slow it, and left alone it starts cutting under paths, fences and the edge of the house.
An old wall leaning out
A timber or block wall is tipping forward, bulging in the middle or staying wet at the bottom. That's usually water trapped behind it pushing, and waiting tends to turn a rebuild of one section into a rebuild of the whole run.
How we handle retaining wall construction
Most of the planning on a retaining wall goes into where the water will go, so drainage is part of our plan from the first sketch, before we talk about block or concrete. We lay out the line, dig down to firm ground and pack a level base, because every row of block above takes its lean from the first one. As the wall goes up we put gravel backfill behind it and a drain pipe along the bottom, so water drops down and out the end instead of piling up and pushing, and those are the parts worth looking for in any quote you get. Then we pack the backfill in layers, cap the wall and shape the ground on top so rain runs away from it.
A new wall often ends up right beside older brick, and if the house or an old garden wall needs work, our masonry restoration repairs it to suit the wall it's in. Some owners want a fire on the new level ground, and planning a fireplace installation along with the wall means we dig and pour that footing once instead of twice.
Segmental block wall
Manufactured concrete blocks stacked dry, without mortar, and locked together with built-in keys or connectors. It suits most garden-height walls and curved lines, and a damaged block can be swapped without tearing out the rest.
Poured concrete wall
Concrete poured into forms around steel reinforcement, so the wall comes out as one solid piece. It suits taller walls, tight spaces and slopes carrying a driveway or a building, and that strength costs more.

What happens after you call about a retaining wall?
Here's how a wall goes from a first call to finished, backfilled ground, and who you'll be dealing with at each step along the way.
Call or send the form
Tell us roughly how long and tall the wall needs to be, and send a few photos of the slope if you can. We get back to you to set a time that works for you.
Walk the slope together
I come out myself, look at where the water runs and point out what I see before I write anything. You get a written estimate with the wall type, the drainage plan and the price, so you know the number before you decide anything.
We sort out permits first
Once you say go, we check with the permit office for your address and handle any permit and review your lot needs. Getting that settled first means the wall goes in the way it was approved.
Build it, then walk it
We build the wall, backfill it and clean up the yard. At the end we walk it together and I show you where the drain lets out, so you'll know what to keep clear.
Why Newport News homeowners call K&R for retaining walls
The one who quotes it builds it
I come out to every job myself to write the estimate, then work alongside our masons on the wall. The person who saw where your water runs is the one standing there when the drain goes in.
Six years on lived-in homes
I started this business in 2020 after my first years laying block and brick on new houses, learning from the masons on those crews. A wall in an existing yard has to fit the house, patio and steps already there, and that's the work I set out to do.
Licensed and fully insured
We're licensed and fully insured, which protects you while a crew and equipment are working on your property. Our work also comes with one plain promise, satisfaction guaranteed.
Water-side rules flagged early
Lots near tidal shores and year-round streams fall under extra city rules here, so if yours does, I flag it at the first visit and any review happens before we start. Catching it then keeps your project from stalling once the yard is already dug up.
Send a few photos of your slope through our contact page or call (757) 782-8614, and I'll come out and show you what I'd do with it.
Retaining walls, grading and drainage on Newport News lots
Newport News sets aside Resource Protection Areas along the water, which take in tidal wetlands, tidal shores and the nontidal wetlands connected to them, plus a buffer 100 feet wide landward of those and along both sides of any stream that flows year-round. Building permit applications for work in those areas go to the city's Department of Codes Compliance, work that disturbs 2,500 square feet or more needs a land disturbance permit, and the city wants an approved site plan before anyone changes the grade of a lot, which a retaining wall usually does. Whether your wall needs a permit comes down to your lot and the wall itself, so before work starts we check with the permit office for your address and handle the paperwork when the job calls for it.
On jobs here we see a lot of backyards that drop toward a creek or marsh and catch the street's runoff on the way down, so we plan where the drain lets out as carefully as the wall. We meet the same water-side slopes on jobs in Hampton and Poquoson, and we build them the same way.
Questions about retaining walls in Newport News
How much does a retaining wall cost near Newport News, VA?
In nearby Hampton, a 3 foot high poured concrete wall installed with gravel backfill and reinforcement usually costs about $40 to $43 per square foot. That's the going rate in the area for that one kind of wall, not our price. I'll write up the number for your own wall after we walk the slope.
What is the best way to choose a retaining wall type for my yard?
Decide first which type your site needs, a poured concrete structural wall or a dry-laid wall of stacked material, because that choice drives much of the price. A dry-laid wall costs much less, while poured concrete earns its higher price where the wall is tall or the load above it is heavy. At the visit I'll tell you which one your slope calls for and why.
Does a retaining wall over 4 feet need an engineer?
Often it does. National extension guides say most walls under four feet can be built by a landscape contractor, and many municipalities require taller walls to be designed by engineers. On a taller wall we check the rule with the city before construction and talk through whether an engineer should design it before you commit.
What changes if my Newport News lot is near tidal water?
Any work that reaches into tidal wetlands needs a permit from the Newport News Wetlands Board, on top of what the permit office asks for. The protected buffer covered above runs 100 feet back from the water, so a yard doesn't have to touch the shore to be affected.
Does a retaining wall contractor need a license in Virginia?
Yes, Virginia licenses contractors through its Board for Contractors, and the license class depends on the size of the contract. A Class C contractor handles construction or improvements when a single contract is over $1,000 but less than $30,000, so it's worth asking which license someone holds before you sign.
How do I make sure a retaining wall has a solid base?
Ask the contractor how they'll build a compacted, solid base, because a wall is only as good as the foundation under it. If the base settles, the bottom row tips and every row above follows it. At the estimate I'll walk you through how we'd dig and pack the base for your slope.
